客員共同研究員（研究当時 特任助教）の飯塚さんの論文がScientific Reportsに出版されました。ケイ酸塩・硫黄・鉄・水の共存する地球形成初期を模擬した条件でJ-PARCにおける高温高圧中性子回折実験を行った結果、硫化鉄には水素は取り込まれず、また残った純鉄も水素化されにくくなることを示しました。

含水鉱物を含まないような系で行われた先行研究では、水素化したFeSができることが報告されていましたが、含水鉱物を系に含む今回の実験では、FeSは水素化せず、代わりに硫黄の含まれない水素化鉄が生成しました。水素化鉄と硫化鉄が共存すると、系の融点が大きく低下し、他の系元素の取り込みに有意な影響を与える可能性があります。このように、複数の軽元素が共存するような系で鉄の水素化反応を考えることはとても重要であると考えています。

M2(論文発表時)の森悠一郞さんを中心とし、高温高圧中性子回折を用いて、ケイ素が共存する条件下で鉄の水素化を調べた論文が出版されました。

ケイ素を含む鉄を水素化させたときに、水素が結晶のどのサイトに取り込まれるのか、粉末中性子回折法を用いて詳細に調べました。

この論文で高温高圧下中性子回折実験における最高圧力を更新しました。広島大、JAERI、量研機構との共同研究です。（本論文は日本鉱物科学会論文賞を受賞しました。）

New paper: structure of Si-doped iron hydride investigated by neutron diffraction

Siをドープした鉄水素化物の論文を出版

A paper on a project directed by Dr. Yamane, an alumnus of our group, is published on Nature Communications. In the paper, we reported the experimental evidence for the second hydrogen-ordered phase of ice. With the crystallographic evidence we reported here, a Roman numeral of "XIX" is now assigned to the new phase.

The presence of a new phase has been proposed since 2018, but no scientists have reported firm experimental results showing the existence of the phase before this work. Experiments using the in-situ dielectric measurement system developed by Dr. Yamane revealed that the phase transition boundary of ice VI when cooled has a bend as shown below. Furthermore, our neutron diffraction results firmly show that ice XIX has a different crystal structure from all other previously reported ice phases.

卒業生の山根さんを中心に、中性子回折と誘電率測定を組み合わせて新しい氷の多形を発見した論文が Nature Communications 誌に出版されました。今回の論文の結晶学的証拠を以って、この新しい氷の相に XIX というローマ数字が付番され、以降は氷XIXと呼ばれることになります。

氷XIXは、氷VIの2番目の水素部分秩序相であり、2018年ごろから存在が示唆されていましたが、決定的な証拠が得られず、論争が続いていました。山根さんの開発した高圧下その場誘電率測定装置を利用した実験により、氷VIを冷却したときの相転移境界に、下図に示すような折れ曲がりがあることが明らかになりました。また、その場中性子回折プロファイルに、既存の氷の相では説明がつかないピークが顕れ、氷XIXがこれまでに知られていなかった結晶構造を持つことを証明しました。これらの実験結果はたしかに氷XIXが存在することを示しており、3年に及ぶ論争を決着させました。

フッ素が含水鉱物のOHを置換することによって、構造の変化が生じます。今後もこうしたフッ素の影響を、他の鉱物の系などで引き続き調べていく計画です。

A review article on high-pressure neutron diffraction experiments and ice polymorphs authored by Associate Professor Kazuki Komatsu has been published in Crystallography Reviews. At least 20 polymorphs exist in ice, and most of the polymorphs discovered since the beginning of this century have been identified by high-pressure neutron diffraction experiments. 小松一生准教授が執筆した高圧下中性子回折実験と氷多形の研究に関する総説がCrystallography Reviews誌から出版されました。高圧下中性子回折技術の進歩と氷研究の進展は切っても切り離せない関係にあります。近年著しい進展のある両分野の関係が一望できる総説となっています。

氷には少なくとも20種類もの多形の存在が知られていますが、今世紀に入ってから発見された氷多形のほとんどは高圧下中性子回折実験によって、その結晶構造が同定されています。

総説中では、まず小松准教授自身が開発してきた低温高圧装置 Mito system を中心とした技術開発の流れがまとめられており、次にこれまで報告された全ての氷多形に関する研究が、結晶学を中心とする視点からひとつずつ解説されています。

New paper about development of new diamond anvil cell for single-crystal neutron diffraction

単結晶中性子回折用高圧セルの論文が出版

Dr. Keishiro Yamashita, who received his Ph.D. in March 2022, has published a paper from Acta Crystallographica C on a new high-pressure phase of KCl hydrate. A figure from this paper was selected for the cover of Acta Cryst. C.

During the crystal growth of the new KCl hydrate, high-pressure phases of water (ice) unavoidably crystallise simultaneously. Dr Yamashita optimised the crystallisation conditions to suppress formation of low-symmetry high-pressure phases of ice (ice VI) and obtained diffraction patterns of the new hydrate with high-symmetry ice VII. Thanks to this, crystal-structure determination was enabled.

X-ray diffraction is not capable of detecting hydrogen atoms in crystal structures, but by combining DFT calculations, Dr Yamashita successfully discussed the hydrogen-chloride bondings in the crystal structure.

2022年３月に博士号を取得した山下恵史朗さんが、本研究室在籍時に発見した新たなKCl水和物高圧相に関する論文がActa Crystallographica Cから出版されました。本論文の図がActa Cryst. C.誌のcoverに選ばれました。

山下さんは、KCl水和物の高圧相を新規に発見したのみならず、同時に成長してしまう氷の高圧相を制御し、対称性の高いice VIIと新規水和物が同時に成長するような条件を見つけることで、水和物の構造決定の邪魔になる氷の回折パターンを最小限にするという工夫で構造決定に成功しました。さらに、DFT計算を組み合わせることで、X線回折では議論が難しい水素原子に関する知見も得られました。

3月に学位を取得した山下恵史朗さん（現・海外学振PD、オーストリア インスブルック大学）を筆頭著者とする、ice VII の精密結晶構造解析の論文がPNASに出版されました。高圧その場中性子回折実験により、これまで知られていなかった特徴的な原子分布を明らかにしました。

粉末ならびに単結晶中性子回折データの最大エントロピー法による解析から、ice VII中の水分子中の水素原子は、下図に示されるような特徴的なリング状の分布をもつことが明らかになりました（A/Cは粉末回折から、B/Dは単結晶回折から求められた原子分布）。

このような局所構造を明らかにするためには、まず質の良い回折データを得ることが必要不可欠です。小松准教授が開発してきた粉末中性子回折用高圧プレス Mito system に加え、山下さんが開発した単結晶中性子回折用ダイヤモンドアンビルセルを用いることで、今回のような精緻な議論が可能になりました。

New publication on detailed crystal-structure analysis of ice VII

A paper first-authored by Mr. Zhao who obtained MSc degree last September has been published on Journal of Solid State Chemistry. 

We discovered that compression of CoSO4·6H2O and CoSO4·7H2O resulted in a novel high-pressure phase, CoSO4·5H2O, and determined its crystal structure through in-situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

2021年の秋に修士課程を終了した趙さんを筆頭著者とする論文がJournal of Solid State Chemistryに出版されました。

CoSO4·6H2O や CoSO4·7H2O に圧力をかけていくと、新規高圧相である CoSO4·5H2O へと相転移することを示し、その結晶構造を高圧下その場単結晶X線回折によって決定しました。NIMSの中野智志博士との共同研究です。

硫化コバルト水和物の高圧新規相の論文が出版

鍵教授とD1の森さんによる日本語の総説が出版されました。J-PARCの高圧中性子回折ビームラインPLANETにおける鉄の水素化に関する中性子回折実験の結果をまとめたものになっています。

地球核は鉄を主成分とする合金であると考えられますが、地震波観測から予測される核の密度は鉄より低く、軽元素が溶け込んで密度を低下させていると推測されています。水素はその有力な候補と考えられますが、鉄のような重元素からなる結晶中に存在する水素の位置や量を決定することは容易ではありません。鍵研のメンバーも協力して建設されたJ-PARC MLFの高圧中性子回折ビームラインPLANETは、実験的に困難が伴う高温高圧下での中性子回折実験を可能にし、実際の地球核の圧力にはまだ及ばないものの、この分野の新しいアプローチを拓いてきました。

今回の総説には、PLANETを用いて明らかになってきた地球深部の水素に関する知見がまとまっています。

Our paper reporting the first crystallographic evidence for a hydrogen-ordered state corresponding to ice IV has been published at J. Phys. Chem. Lett. We detected evidence for a weak hydrogen-ordering phase transition in DCl-doped ice IV using in-situ neutron diffraction methods at PLANET beamline in MLF/J-PARC.

M2の小林さんを筆頭著者とする論文がJ. Phys. Chem. Lett.誌にて出版されました。高圧準安定相である氷IVの水素秩序化の証拠を、J-PARCの高圧中性子回折ビームラインPLANETにおける実験で初めて捉え、報告しました。

Our new paper about NaCl tridecahydrate authored by ex-students Dr Yamashita and Mr Nakayama et al. has been published at Acta Cryst. B!

In this paper, we report precise crystal structure including hydron (deuterium) atomic distributions revealed by in-situ high-pressure neutron diffraction methods using high-pressure apparatus developed by Prof Komatsu and Dr Yamashita throughout the years. We also revealed the structural similarities (and differences) with ice VI.

卒業生の山下さん、中山さんらを著者とするNaCl 13水和物の構造解析論文がActa Cryst. B誌に出版されました。

この水和物は高圧で生じる新規水和物として今年アメリカのグループからも発表されていましたが、我々は小松准教授・山下さんらが開発してきた高圧下中性子回折専用の装置群の強みを生かし、水素（重水素）の分布を含めた精密な構造解析を行ったうえで、これまで議論されていなかった水和物と氷高圧相（氷VI）との構造類似性を報告しました。

Associate Professor Kazuki Komatsu of Geochemical Research Center has been awarded the Academic Award of the Crystallographic Society of Japan for his research achievements entitled “Elucidation of Crystal Structures of Ice Polymorphs by Neutron Diffraction Experiments under High Pressure.” We extend our heartfelt congratulations on this honor. This award is presented to researchers under the age of 50 who have conducted original and outstanding research in the field of crystallography.

Associate Professor Komatsu has focused his research on ice, one of the most familiar and ubiquitous substances in our daily lives, and has achieved numerous pioneering results by elucidating its crystal structures under high-pressure conditions. Neutron diffraction experiments, which enable the precise determination of hydrogen atom positions, are essential for determining the crystal structures of ice. He developed an experimental system—commonly known as the MITO system—that enables simultaneous control of temperature and pressure in the low-temperature region, which had previously been technically challenging. By fully utilizing the intense pulsed neutron source at J-PARC MLF, he has significantly advanced structural studies of high-pressure ice. As a result of these efforts, he has successively reported groundbreaking achievements that have dramatically advanced the science of ice, including the synthesis of stacking-disorder-free ice Ic and the experimental demonstration of hydrogen-bond symmetrization in ice at approximately 80 GPa.

We sincerely congratulate Associate Professor Komatsu on this well-deserved award and wish him continued success in his future research endeavors.

小松一生准教授が「日本結晶学会学術賞」を受賞しました。本賞は、結晶学に関する独創的な研究を行った50歳未満の研究者に授与されるものです。

小松准教授は、私たちの身の回りに存在する最も身近で普遍的な物質の一つである氷を対象に、高圧条件下における結晶構造の解明に取り組み、数多くの先導的な研究成果を挙げてきました。氷の結晶構造を決定するためには、水素原子の位置を高精度で決定できる中性子回折実験が不可欠です。彼は、これまで技術的に困難であった低温領域における温度と圧力の同時制御を可能とする実験システム（通称 MITO system）を開発し、J-PARC MLFの強力なパルス中性子源を最大限に活用することで、高圧氷の構造研究を大きく前進させました。その成果として、積層不整の全くない氷Icの合成や、約80 GPaにおける氷の水素結合対称化の実証など、氷のサイエンスを飛躍的に進展させる研究成果を次々と発表しています。

A new paper authored by Mori et al. is now out in PEPI. We reported using the PLANET beamline in J-PARC that Si-bearing iron shows 10% larger hydrogenation-induced volume expansion than pure iron. This would be useful constraints for the chemical composition of the Earth's core. 

森さんを筆頭著者とする Si-Fe-H 系の論文が PEPI 誌から出版されました。J-PARC の高圧ビームライン PLANET を用い、Siを5%含む鉄は、純鉄と比較して水素が取り込まれた際の堆積膨張が大きいことを示しました。これは地球核の組成を制約するうえで有用な情報です。

A new paper by Yoshioka, Kobayashi, and Kagi is published in ACS Earth and Space Chemistry.

Under high pressure, an aqueous alanine solution with a slight excess of the L-enantiomer yields only racemic crystals upon high-pressure ice formation, resulting in selective enrichment of the L-enantiomer in the solution.

修士２年生の吉岡さんを筆頭著者とする論文が ACS Earth and Space Chemistry 誌から出版されました。

アミノ酸の一種アラニンについて、L型がD型よりわずかに多い水溶液に圧力を加えると、氷の高圧相の析出に伴ってL型とD型が等量含まれるラセミ結晶のみが析出し、溶液中でL型が選択的に濃縮されることを発見しました。
